Home trends don't circulate as quickly as fashion, so when skirted furniture re-entered the spotlight after decades of being relegated to grandma-esque interiors, it caught our attention. Why is skirted furniture so popular? Experts have opinions. If you ask Serena & Lily's chief design officer, Kirsty Williams, she attributes it to people seeking to "incorporate softness and layers into their living environments in a tailored way." Designer Hans Lorei agrees: "In a sleek digital world, there's a strong desire for things that look handmade, artisan, and ornamental," he explains. "There has been such a heavy emphasis on calm neutral approachable interiors and it's gotten a little boring for most people. Skirting is just the manifestation of the desire to reintroduce decor."

Brands, including Serena & Lily, have added new colorful skirted furniture into recent collections. "It's a very classic silhouette that has stood the test of time, and brings a sense of luxury and sophistication to any space," Williams says. "They effectively act as a neutral yet bring approachable detail with a little extra interest."

To incorporate a skirted piece or two into your home, consider your aesthetic goals. "To me, skirting can read Country Cottage, Victorian, Medieval/Renaissance, or Palm Springs late '60s," Lorei says, adding that he doesn't see the retro style as the perfect fit for more modern homes. However, if you really love it and want to mix it in with your more contemporary pieces, you could. The trick to pulling this off? "Mix skirted pieces with leggier furniture to keep things feeling balanced and not too heavy or Victorian," designer Zoe Feldman advises. "I love this sofa designed by Colin King for The Future Perfect. I saw it styled in his apartment and the formality of the box-pleated skirt contrasted with the warm, minimalist foundation of his loft hit just the right note." Ultimately, you should do what feels right for you and your space.

When buying skirted furniture with prints, follow the advise of designer Miranda Cullen. "You want to make sure the piece is either the showstopper, or the backdrop." We think this floral orange accent chair fills that bill. To that point, Cullen advises that you don't have too many busy pieces surrounding this chair, and make it the focal point so that the room has a cohesive flow.

It's hard to find a skirted table, so why not just add one on? You can purchase a table skirt, like this one from Etsy, at under $200. It's a small way to zhuzh up your space without spending a lot of money.
