Winter can be the most wonderful time of the year for so many reasons, but the season — with its chilly temps and everything that comes with it — can also wreak havoc on your skin.

“Colder weather can promote dryness,” says Daniel Sugai, MD, a board-certified medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatologist, adding, “many chronic skin conditions tend to flare in the winter, including eczema/atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.” (Find Daniel Sugai IRL at North Pacific Dermatology in Washington or online on Instagram, TikTok and Youtube.)

Even the air from heaters can cause problems for our skin, he adds. “It can get quite dehydrated from moisture being pulled out of our skin as we sleep with the heaters turned on to warm our households," Dr. Sugai explains.

At first glance, dehydrated skin might appear more dull, fine lines and wrinkles might be more pronounced and lips and eyelids might be chapped. If your skin is flaking, itching or even red, it’s definitely time to tweak your routine.

Ingredients play a big role in skin health. Sugai has MVPs for this time of year. “My favorites include glycerin and hyaluronic acid,” he says. “They are classic humectants which draw in water like a magnet and retain moisture in our skin to give us a dewy, plump look.”

“You can find these hydrators in serums and moisturizers. I like to use both in the morning before applying a lightweight sunscreen." [Yes, you need to wear SPF year-round.]

Other ingredients to look out for to help repair or restore your skin barrier are ceramides, panthenol and squalane, Dr. Sugai says.

But don’t go loading all these into your routine simultaneously, he cautions. “I would incorporate skincare products slowly, one at a time. Many times I see patients add on too many products all at once and can cause an irritant or allergic contact dermatitis/rash on their face. And, always be sure to run things by your dermatologist if you are on prescription medications.”
