Is this skillet pizza recipe even better than delivery?

That’s what a viral YouTube video has plenty of home chefs saying.

The homemade pizza recipe comes courtesy of Adam Ragusea, who’s drawn more than 3 million views with his video explaining the simple pie-making process. It all comes down to one secret ingredient: a 10-inch, cast-iron skillet.

Here at In The Know, we love a cast-iron skillet. So, when we heard there was a way to make an entire pizza in one, we just had to try it. Reading the comments on Ragusea’s video only made us more desperate to give it a go.

“This recipe changed my life a little. It’s the best, cheapest, easiest pizza I could have ever dreamed of existing,” another added.

How to make the viral skillet pizza recipe

First off, here’s everything you’ll need. It may sound like a lot, but in the end, this recipe is much, much easier than making pizza the traditional way.

  • For the dough:1/4 teaspoon active dry yeast
    1 teaspoon sugar
    1/2 cup warm water
    1 cup flour
    ½ teaspoon salt

  • For coating your panOlive oil
    A sprinkle of cornmeal
    1 teaspoon oregano
    A pinch of salt
    A pinch of pepper

  • For the sauce⅓ cup canned pureed tomatoes
    1/4 cup olive oil
    1 tablespoon fresh basil
    Sugar, to taste

  • For your toppings:4 ounces low-moisture mozzarella cheese
1-2 cups grated parmesan cheese (really though, add as much as you want)
Any other toppings of your choice (we tried bell peppers!)

To start, make your dough by mixing the yeast, sugar and water together in a bowl. Let it sit for five minutes, then add your flour and salt. Now it’s time to knead.

Using a stand mixer (or your hands, if necessary), knead the dough until well combined, then cover and let sit at room temperature for around two hours — or once it’s doubled in size.

Next, season your skillet with olive oil, cornmeal, oregano, salt and pepper. Spread the dough across the pan and preheat your broiler.

Meanwhile, make your sauce by mixing tomatoes, olive oil, basil and sugar. Spread the sauce evenly across your dough, heat up your stove and cook on medium-high for about five minutes.

Once you start to smell the dough getting crispy, add cheese and toppings, then transfer it to the preheated broiler and cook for another seven minutes or so. Then, take out your pizza and, well, finito!

Is skillet pizza worth making?

In short, yes. We reviewed this recipe on three points of criteria: Easiness to make, how it tastes and how good it looks when it’s done.

The recipe isn’t simple, exactly — but the cast iron pan does plenty of the work for you. For that reason, we gave it a 3/5 for easiness.

Meanwhile, this is one good-tasting pizza. The dough is perfectly crispy, and the broiler makes the cheese so gooey and melty. It’s not the best pizza we’ve ever had, but it’s better than plenty of delivery chains. 4/5.

Lastly, appearance. This thing looks great. As irresistible as it is to eat, it’s even harder to not post this thing on social media when it’s done. 5/5.

So there you have it. The skillet pizza recipe gets a solid average of 4/5, which, in our book, is more than enough to try it out.
