Skiers Trigger Avalanche Just Outside Canadian Ski Resort

This weekend, a group of three skiers triggered an avalanche just outside the boundaries of Big White Ski Resort, Canada.

Big White issued a statement regarding the event on Facebook.

The avalanche occurred at 11:30 A.M. on Saturday in an out-of-bounds zone called Eco Bowl behind the Falcon Chair.

No one was injured in the incident, but the avalanche involved was quite large—large enough, in fact, to "destroy a motor vehicle," Big White reports.

Big White hopes the avalanche serves as a reminder of the "hazards that are beyond the resort's marked boundaries."

According to Avalanche Canada, "high" avalanche danger exists in the backcountry outside Big White.

On March 13th, Avalanche Canada published a blog post detailing the challenges associated with British Columbia's current snowpack.

"Most of western Canada has been entrenched in a pattern of large human-triggered avalanches since the start of March," forecaster Simon Horton wrote in the blog post. "The culprit of these persistent slab avalanches is a weak layer above a crust that formed in early February."

Then, temperatures spiked, which, as Horton explained, increased the risk of avalanches further. His advice? Stay out of avalanche terrain until the snowpack stabilizes.
