Skiers Caught By In-Bounds Avalanche At Washington Ski Resort

This weekend, on January 28th, three skiers were caught by a large in-bounds avalanche at Mission Ridge, Washington.

No one was injured or completely buried by the slide, which took place on the Nertz run below the Wenatchee Express lift.

After the avalanche on Sunday, Mission Ridge's ski patrol team conducted a search of the slide debris with Recco devices and an avalanche rescue dog from Stevens Pass.

"At this time, there have not been any reports of missing skiers, and the skiers involved in the slide did not see any other skiers in the vicinity," the patrol team wrote in a statement (bottom of the page) shared with the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC).

The Wenatchee Express Chairlift and Chair 3 were closed for the rest of the day following the avalanche.

The following morning—Monday, January 29th—Mission Ridge wrote the following in its snow report: "All parties in the area at the time were accounted for. We took measures to close down terrain and chairlifts to assess conditions and perform avalanche mitigation work in a variety of locations on the upper mountain."

All of the resort's chairs have been reopened as of today, January 30th.

Like several other resorts throughout Washington state, Mission Ridge has faced warm weather and rainfall over the past few days, although conditions are expected to become colder later this week.
