Skier Tours Washington Ski Area With Low Snow: "I've Never Seen It This Bad"

Last week, YouTuber and skier Clint Tosland headed to Mt. Baker Ski Area, Washington, to see how the legendary resort was faring.

His assessement? "I've never seen it this bad."

As evidenced by this video, Mt. Baker's status is decidedly un-snowy. The resort has been hit by an ungodly combination of warm weather, rain, and occasional snowfall for the past few months. Unsurprisingly, the SNOTEL readings for the North Puget Sound, where Mt. Baker is located, are well below normal.

Grant Gunderson, a legendary action sports photographer and Mt. Baker local, encapsulated the situation this weekend on Instagram, writing, "To say this winter has been a disaster of a ski season so far is an understatement."

Gunderson's assessment is perfectly reasonable. Tosland's video showcases rocks, brush, and creeks that should be buried at this point—it's mid-winter, after all. By all standard measures, the skiing's pretty rough at Mt. Baker right now.

However, there are two silver linings.

For one, Tosland proved that manky, rained-on snow is still plenty of fun to ski. He arrived at Mt. Baker with the lowest possible expectations and had a great day skiing.

Two, Mt. Baker is one of the snowiest (if not the snowiest—it depends on who you ask) ski areas in North America. As Tosland notes, Mt. Baker receiving 60+ inches of snow over a weekend isn't out of the question. And it's only February, meaning there's still plenty of time for a comeback.

That comeback may or may not happen. Regardless, getting out—conditions be darned—usually proves worthwhile. Those sleeper days where the rain mank is actually fun to ski are some of the best.
