Skier Descends Other-Worldly Landscape On "Spontaneous" Trip

Over the years, I've developed a sense of what "skiable" terrain looks like. There's a bit of variability here: glades, steep Alaskan faces, midwestern handrails, and manicured groomers all come to mind. Rarely -- outside of instances when skiers try to ride down escalators or other decidedly unskiable surfaces -- do I see these images challenged or expanded upon.

But this video from professional skier Fabian Lentsch, which looks like it was shot on another planet after a Martian snowstorm, adds another terrain category to my once-solidified lexicon.

Here's a little context for Lentsch's video:

"Spontaneous half-day stop in Cappadocia on our way back from a @snowmads journey in the east. We only came to see the landscape that day which we knew well from biking trips in the past. Surprised by the thin snow layer @konsti_ottner pushed us to get into our gear and try to ride it 😅 Funny few hours and also a good day to use the @scottfreeski amplifier goggle lens ☁️ 😎 ⁣

Probably not your favorite skiing trip but feel free to hit us up @snowmadstravel if you want to explore it on an enduro bike some day :)." ⁣

Cappadocia is located in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The region is known for its unique desert-y landscape that looks like a set for a sci-fi film—also, hot air balloons and mountain biking.

I think AI has ruined gorgeous photos for me because my gut reaction upon seeing this photo was, "Huh, that really looks like it was created on Midjourney."

Similarly, if you told me someone had skied this terrain, I'd probably doubt you. Remember those standard "skiable terrain" categories I mentioned? Yeah. This doesn't equate.

But the fact that it actually equates thanks to the efforts of Fabian Lentsch and Konstantin Ottner excites me. Loads of places in the world could be skied that haven't been skied yet -- I'm invested in where the intrepid pros of our generation head next.
