How Do Ski Resorts Handle High Winds?

Yesterday, an extreme weather alert was issued at Steamboat Resort, CO. Officials posted a video to Instagram detailing what high winds look like at the resort.

Officials explained that while things may seem sunny in town, the winds are still whipping up top. Because they knew people were curious, Steamboat posted a Q&A with Jake Ingle, Director of Slope Maintenance.

We won't spoil the full Q&A, but there were a lot of interesting facts related to wind closures and ski resorts that any dedicated skier will be interested in.

Seeing the resort close during a snowstorm can be devastating, especially if that is the only day you have off and you cannot go into the backcountry for safety reasons.

However, Jake Ingle explained that often, the resort closes certain lifts but not all lifts at the same time, and this is simply due to the wind direction. "The Steamboat Gondola, for instance, is particularly susceptible to south winds by the snowmaking control and east wind at the top.”

There is not a hard and fast (pun intended) rule for when lifts close, but 35 mph is a good ballpark for when things are going to be problematic.

The resort also allows skiers and riders to ascend using lifts, whereas on-foot passengers are denied access. You can ski or snowboard down a mountain in high winds, but hiking hours down with cold winds whipping snow up in your face? Talk about a grueling descent.

As Steamboat explained that situation, "rescuing foot passengers often requires the use of a cabin cat or other specialized equipment, which can be logistically challenging."

Officials at Steamboat Ski Resort remind us that wind-related closures are an unavoidable part of mountain living. However, closures are done to maintain safety for guests and employees alike.

"Next time you find yourself waiting out a windy day, take solace in the knowledge that our dedicated team is diligently monitoring conditions to ensure your mountain experience is both exhilarating and safe."
