Ski Related Names on Shortlist for Utah's New NHL Team
The Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL) have called Phoenix, Arizona home since 1996, but that's changing this upcoming season.
The team announced at the conclusion of the '23/'24 season that they're moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, and being purchased by billionaire Ryan Smith. Smith owns the Utah Jazz, and is co-owner of Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer.
Smith is electing to change the name of the team from the Coyotes, but he's asking fans for help. An open survey has been created for fans to vote on a shortlist of 20 potential names.
Of these names, multiple stand out as snow, or ski-related. These names, in particular, pay homage to Salt Lake City's world-renowned access to some of the best ski resorts on the planet.
You can view the full list here, but as skiers, the options below are our favorite:
NHL Utah Potential 'Ski-Related' Names:
Utah Frost
Utah Squall
Utah Yeti
Utah Freeze
Utah Mountaineers
Utah Black Diamonds
Utah Blizzard
Utah Canyons
Utah Glaciers
Utah Powder
Utah Ice
Of these ski-related names, one clearly sticks out to us. 'The Utah Powder' might not sound as intimidating as 'Black Diamonds' or 'Yeti' , but we're selfishly hoping it wins. Sharing our namesake with an NHL team would be quite something.
Fans have until May 22nd, 2024 to vote on their four favorite names. Details regarding the next phases of voting have yet to be released.
To all of our skier friends in the Salt Lake City area, you know what to do. Flood the vote! Let's make sure Utah's future hockey team is named after something related to skiing. It's only right!
