Ski Patrollers Preview New Terrain At Canada's Marmot Basin

Marmot Basin in the Canadian Rockies has been around since the 1920s, but new improvements are happening all the time.

Just today, footage surfaced of Ski Patrollers previewing the new ‘Cirque’ expansion at Marmot Basin.

The Cirque expansion might as well be called the Absolutely Unreal expansion, because it is nothing shy of insane. With 9 charted-out trails (all double-black diamond, of course) over 62 acres of skiable terrain, "Marmot Basin Cirque offers some of the best expert, high alpine terrain in the Canadian Rockies."

Marmot explains that the bowls and chutes offered by the Cirque expansion were never before accessible to the public.

Specifically, the 125m - 200m fall line runs range from 25 to 45 degrees in angle.

But just how steep is "steep"? Is 45 degrees really that crazy?

YouTube channel OnTheSnow explains the science behind slope degrees. Surprisingly, "Corbet's Couloir in Jackson, Wyoming is actually only 30 or 40 degrees."

Watch "Snow Science: How Steep is Steep?" below.

Corbet's looks pretty gnarly staring down into the drop. If that's only 30 or 40 degrees, I'm not sure I'd want to see 45.

Then again, Ski Patrol makes it look pretty good.
