Rarely does my twin sister, an attorney, try a skincare tool before I, a beauty writer, do. A few months ago, however, she nabbed a buzzy microdermabrasion device she’d seen circulating social media, and, in a turn of events, became my source for the beauty nitty-gritty.

Her verdict: The PMD Personal Microderm Pro tool is absolutely worth the hype. Naturally, I snagged my own — and I’m nothing short of enthralled with how much smoother my skin has become. If you haven’t yet purchased your own, consider this your chance to snap one up; for a limited time, the PMD Pro is 25 percent off at Amazon and Ulta.

The PMD Personal Microderm Pro is a professional-grade at-home microdermabrasion device. Similar to an in-office microdermabrasion treatment, the tool sloughs dead, dull, dry surface skin cells to reveal a radiant complexion almost instantly. Its mechanism of action: a spinning, crystal-encrusted disk, which clicks into the machine and provides a similar feel and effect as a professional microdermabrasion device.

Furthermore, results are visible after a single use, and I can personally attest to this. This instant gratification factor spurs genuine excitement each time I power on my PMD as part of my weekly at-home facial.

I’ve used numerous at-home microdermabrasion tools in the past, many of which I’ve sworn by. That said, I find myself reaching for my PMD more often than I do other devices, as it’s ludicrously easy to operate and requires very few cumbersome add-ons to get it up and running. Around the size of a soda can, it’s slim, ergonomically designed, and a breeze to operate. Plus, the rechargeable device is entirely cordless — perfect if you prefer to pace around the house while you’re doing your skincare instead of feeling tethered to an outlet.

In addition to spinning exfoliating discs, the tool incorporates light suction power, which simultaneously unearths debris from pores as the disk sloughs dead cells. PMD is user-friendly, can be held comfortably in one hand, and requires all of one minute to use, in my experience. Moreover, the device does all of the hard work; there’s no pressing or much manual work required from the user. In addition to the face, the PMD can also be used on rough areas of the body, and includes larger, specified exfoliating disks for this purpose.

While the tool is on the pricier side, the PMD is a significantly more economical option than the in-office alternative. After all, professional microdermabrasion treatments are hardly cheap; a single in-office session, costs around $167 on average, per the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. FWIW: The PMD’s current sub-$150 sale price is less than the cost of one pro microdermabrasion session.

A word of caution: This professional-grade device is strong. Case in point: My sister overzealously gave the PMD a whirl the first time she used it and texted me a photo of what she dubbed “face hickeys” post-use. Had she perused the instruction manual, she’d have read that pressing the device into the skin is inadvisable, and perhaps used a less-gritty exfoliation disk for her foray, but we can all learn from her mistakes.

That said, sensitive skin types needn’t necessarily fear; the device contains an assortment of four exfoliating disks, each of which offers a specific intensity of skin-sloughing. Per the instructions, it’s prudent to start with the training disk, which is the least gritty of the lot. Once you’ve confirmed that your skin reacts well, move up to the next disk, and so on. I’m currently using the strongest intensity level with excellent results; my sister, after starting a bit too eagerly, has scaled back to one of the gentler disks, and has since had no issue.

In the same vein, an Ulta shopper with “ultra-sensitive skin” has been using the PMD for two years, citing only “smooth and glowy” results. Another enthusiastic fan, a model, says they’re “so invested” in the tool, which transformed their previously “dry, flaky skin.” In fact, the shopper credits the device for supercharging their modeling career: “I owe my bookings to this amazing device!” Finally, yet another fan says PMD gave them “new skin.”
