The new three-part, true-crime docuseries, Sins of Our Mother, just dropped on Netflix, and the disturbing story is leaving viewers with all kinds of questions. The doc tells the haunting story of Lori Vallow Daybell, a Mormon mother who has been accused of murdering two of her children with the help of her fifth husband, Chad Daybell.

The documentary lays out how Lori and Chad became wrapped up in doomsday beliefs after meeting at a spiritual conference where Chad was speaking in Utah in 2018, per ABC. Chad believed that he could see good and bad spirits (aka “zombies”), and Lori quickly started adopting his extreme ideologies.

The docuseries features interviews with Lori’s only living son, Colby Ryan, along with other family members and acquaintances, who detail the events that led up to the deaths of Lori’s children, and the death of Chad’s wife, Tammy Daybell.

While Lori is the main focus of the doc, her alleged crimes are also closely tied to her husband, Chad. But who, exactly, is Chad Daybell, and where is he now? Here’s everything you need to know.

Who is Chad Daybell?

Chad Daybell was a professional cemetery sexton from Rexburg, Idaho, who crafted a career as a novelist and podcaster, according to CBS News.

Chad produced religious content that focused on the apocalypse, or the end of the world. His religious beliefs were dubbed "extreme," as he thought he could talk to dead people and see the future. Chad also believed that some people on Earth had souls that had left their bodies, and the only way to release their spirits to heaven was to kill the bodies, CBS News reported.

How did Chad meet Lori Vallow?

Chad and Lori first met at a spiritual conference in Utah and developed a connection not long after. That same year, they worked on a podcast together. Lori soon developed a “cult-like devotion” to him, per CBS News. After Lori started spending more time with Chad, she told friends and family that she had been chosen by God to carry out a mission.

What did Chad Daybell do?

Chad is accused of participating in the killings of his wife, Tammy Daybell, along with Lori’s children, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old JJ Vallow, the documentary explains. The children's bodies were found on the property of Chad's Idaho home.

Chad and Lori were arrested in 2020 and will face their trials in January of 2023.

Does he have any other kids?

Yes. Chad has five kids with his former wife, Tammy. They spoke with CBS News last year to maintain that their father is innocent.

"None of this would've happened if Lori Vallow had never come into my family's life," said Chad's daughter Emma Murray. The children added that while the evidence looks bad, they believe that their father was roped into a murder scandal.

Who is Tammy Daybell?

Tammy Daybell is the former wife of Chad Daybell. The two got married in Utah in 1990, per East Idaho News.

Tammy died on October 19, 2019, at the age of 49, per Fox 10. Initially, she was suspected to have died from natural causes, and no autopsy was performed.

"My room was down the hall. And I heard a thump," the couple's son, Garth Daybell, told CBS. "And heard my dad yell, 'Garth, Garth, come quick,' with the most panic I'd ever heard in his voice."

But following Chad and Lori's quick marriage and the disappearance of Lori's children, Tammy's body was exhumed in late 2019. The autopsy results have not yet been released, but Garth said authorities "told me that she'd been asphyxiated...but we never saw an autopsy," per CBS.

Tammy's sister Samantha Gwilliam told NBC News that Chad married Lori 17 days after Tammy's death.

“I was shocked because at that point, Tammy had only been gone for a month,” she said. “That was too soon for anybody to get over my sister.”

What was he charged with?

Chad was charged with Tammy's murder in May of 2021, and Chad and Lori have also been charged with the first-degree murder in the deaths of Lori’s children, whose bodies were found on Chad’s property, CBS reported. Both pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Where is Chad Daybell now?

Chad is in jail in Idaho, according to East Idaho News. He has maintained his innocence but both Lori and Chad could face the death penalty if convicted.
