Sinéad O'Connor Wrote About Teenage Son's Death a Week Before Passing

Only a week before she passed away at the age of 56, Sinéad O'Connor shared her earnest emotions regarding her son Shane's death in a social media post.

O'Connor lost her 17-year-old son Shane in early 2022, when he died by suicide.

On July 17, 2023, 18 months after Shane's death, O'Connor replied to a post from the Inspirational Quotes account @SeffSaid that said, "Tell me how your life is going with emojis."

She wrote, "#lostmy17yrOldSonToSuicidein2022. Been living as undead night creature since. . He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves."

"He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him," concluded O'Connor, sharing a photo of herself and her son as well.

Many people on social media shared kind words of support for O'Connor in response to her post.

At the time of Shane's death, O'Connor wrote in a since-deleted tweet, “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.”

After, the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer decided to cancel all live performances throughout 2022, with a team saying in a statement that it was "due to continuing grief over the tragic loss of her beloved son Shane," and "a decision she has had to make for her own health and well being at this time."

Shortly before her death, O'Connor was working on new music and shared plans to tour in the future.

O'Connor is survived by her three other children. She had a son named Jake Reynolds, 34, with record producer John Reynolds, a daughter named Roison Waters, 25, with Irish journalist John Waters, and a son named Yeshua Bonadio, 15, with  Frank Bonadio. O'Connor shared Shane with Irish folk singer Donal Lunny.
