Sinead O'Connor

Irish singer-songwriter Imelda May penned a touching tribute to the late Sinead O'Connor on what would have been her birthday—which happened to be the same day of The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan's funeral.

On Friday, Dec. 8, May took to Instagram to honor O'Connor, who died on July 26. O'Connor would have turned 57. Friday was also the day MacGowan was laid to rest following his late November death at age 65.

"Happy Birthday Sinead. We send Shane off to join you today," May captioned her post. "What a day for Ireland. How blessed we were to have had such giants in our midst. Myself and Sinead and my darling @victoriamaryclarke at @shanemacgowanofficial 60th celebration (and the day we lost Dolores) All my love to Sineads and Shane’s families today. Grá Mór 💚💚."

A week prior, May posted an Instagram tribute honoring MacGowan in the wake of his death. The singer had been hospitalized after being diagnosed with encephalitis in December 2022.

"Thank you Shane. 💚 Thank you for opening your heart and sharing with us your glorious talents," May captioned her social media post. "We’ll never see the likes of again. Your genius songwriting and poetry weaved of words and wisdom that made mortals feel seen, heard and moved from stoney stoicism to quiet tears."

At the end of her lengthy tribute for MacGowan, May referenced O'Connor, writing, "give Sinéad and Kirsty a hug from me."
