What Does It Do?

The Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector is a waterproof bedding layer that fits right over a mattress to help shield it from moisture, bacteria, allergens, dust mites, and bed bugs. It's a five-sided cover that secures to any regular mattress just like a fitted sheet, equipped with very deep pockets to ensure that all corners are covered and to prevent any slippage.

As its name suggests, it also offers a benefit that few other mattress protectors on the market do: The cover is made with a proprietary, conductive material called TitanCool that is not only cool to the touch but also incredibly smooth. In fact, this same material is also used on the cover of Brooklyn Bedding's Aurora Hybrid Mattress. Our tester Erica Murphy

tried it out, saying, “When I unboxed the mattress, it felt like cool air was seeping out of the box. Upon the first touch, the fabric felt cool against my skin, too.”

This cooling mattress protector provides the dual benefits of protecting your mattress while also enhancing the feel. If you love the support level of your existing mattress, but you wish that you slept just a little bit cooler on it, this protector is meant to provide exactly that.

Why Do I Love It?

When I got my Helix hybrid mattress 6 years ago, cooling bedding wasn't really a *thing* yet — the sleep landscape has evolved a lot since then. Now you can get a completely chilled-out set: cooling sheets, cooling pillows, and cooling mattresses.

Many popular mattress brands now offer models that are built for temperature regulation, or they promote a cool-to-the-touch cover as one of the “premium” add-ons of a product that doesn’t come with it. However, this feature can run upwards of $500 on top of what you’re already paying for a new mattress. And as much as we love the concept behind a cooling mattress, you’ll need to cover it with a mattress protector anyway. These protectors tend to be thick barriers that completely cancel out whatever texture or cooling benefits your mattress offers.

Having said that, the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector is the ideal solution for this issue and for those shopping on a budget. It enhances the feel of a mattress I already love for a fraction of what a brand-new product with this cooling feature built into it would cost.

The difference with this mattress protector is very noticeable, right from the start. Its quilted surface is quite smooth — you actually may find it a slight adjustment getting used to how slick your mattress surface is. However, the cooling feature is incredible because it can actually be felt through your sheets. Having slept on multiple brands of cotton sateen and percale, bamboo, eucalyptus, microfiber, flannel, and linen sheets with this very mattress protector layered underneath, the cooling transfer remains effective.

As with nearly all cool-to-the-touch materials, you do have to keep in mind that it isn't a cure-all for night sweats. Phase-changing fabrics work best in tandem with other materials that facilitate airflow. So, if your bedroom is hot, your sheets and comforter are heavy, and you don't use a fan when you sleep, this cooling mattress protector can only do so much.

From my 3 years of experience with this mattress protector, I love how refreshing it makes my bed feel when I get into it at the end of the day, and I feel like it keeps my body temperature comfortably regulated instead of ice-cold throughout the night. I also haven't experienced any shrinking or quality issues with the material after laundering, beyond occasional pilling on the surface — I use a pill remover to remedy this whenever it happens.

The Final Word

While the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector may be a little pricey as far as mattress protectors go, its cooling properties make it very much worth the investment. It's arguably a better value than buying a cooling mattress because its phase-changing material transfers right through to your sheets instead of being covered up by an additional layer.

I highly recommend getting it if you’re happy with your current mattress’s softness and support level, but you could use a little extra chill at the end of your day.
