Simone Biles Speaks Out After Brother Tevin Arrested and Charged for Triple Murder
On Monday, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles opened up to her fans after news broke over the weekend that her brother had been arrested and charged for triple murder.
“Still having a hard time processing last week's news," Simone wrote in a screenshot posted to Twitter.
Simone’s brother, 24-year-old Tevin Biles-Thomas, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder following a fatal shooting on New Year's Eve. He has been charged with murder, voluntary manslaughter, felonious assault, and perjury. Tevin was arrested Thursday at Fort Stewart in Georgia according to a joint statement from the Cleveland Division of Police and the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
“My heart aches for everyone involved, especially for the victims and their families. There is nothing that I can say that will heal anyone's pain, but I do want to express my sincere condolences to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy," Simone continued in her tweet. "I ask everyone to please respect my family's privacy as we deal with our pain. XO."
Like Simone, Tevin, grew up in Ohio and was adopted by family after some time in foster care when their mother could no longer care for them. In the past, Simone has opened up about the fact her mother suffered from substance abuse and her grandparents saved her from what could have been an increasingly hard upbringing. According to People however, Simone and Tevin reportedly lived very separate lives growing up, while Tevin was raised by a great aunt, Simone lived in another state with her grandparents.
The tragic news comes just a few weeks after the world celebrated alongside Simone as she became the first female gymnast to land a triple-double combination (two back flips and three mid-air twists) at the end of a routine. It secured her sixth U.S. title win at the U.S. Gymnastics Championship.
We hope Simone and her family takes all the space and time they need to heal during this emotionally trying time.
