Simona Halep Wins the 2018 French Open

Halep, the Romanian number one ranked female tennis player in the world, defeated American Sloane Stephens to win the 2018 French Open.

Simona Halep, the 26-year-old number one ranked female tennis player in the world, has just won the 2018 French Open. She defeated the 10th-seeded American Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday. Stephens, for her part, told reporters that the women’s finals trophy “looks good” on Halep, and that there is “no one else I’d rather lose to than the number one in the world.” Halep is the first Romanian to win a Grand Slam since 1978. (Her manager, Virginia Ruzici, won the French Open 40 years ago.) Halep had lost at Roland Garros in both 2014 and 2017 and in this year’s Australian Open.

“In the last game I felt like I can’t breathe anymore. I did everything I could. It’s amazing what is happening now,” Halep told reporters after claiming victory. “I was dreaming for this moment since actually I started to play tennis.”
