After falling off his electric bike and breaking his back last summer, the 61-year-old judge was forced to temporary leave the show. Now, after a successful surgery and months of recovery, the British executive producer is feeling like himself again, which means AGT hopefuls should expect to hear his one-of-a-kind feedback again. After all, Simon has never been shy to say what's on his mind. We all remember his bold and brash comments from the early American Idol years, don't we?
During his early TV days, the music and television mogul considered himself to be a ladies man. But in 2009, Simon reportedly started dating his current girlfriend, Lauren Silverman.
How Simon met Lauren
He first met her at Barbados' Sandy Lane resort in 2004 when she was vacationing with her then-husband, real estate mogul Andrew Silverman. Simon and Andrew hit it off and, according to sources, Simon set his eyes on Lauren early on.
Still, Simon continued to date other women, including entertainment journalist Terri Seymour and makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy. He was engaged to Mezhgan from 2010 to 2011, but later claimed it was "a big mistake."
After two failed relationships, Simon went back to someone who made him feel at ease — Lauren, a 43-year-old New York City socialite.
Things turn scandalous
Even though she was married, Simon and Lauren secretly started dating. However, when Lauren got pregnant in 2013, the couple was forced to make their relationship public.
Soon after, her husband filed for an at-fault divorce, citing adultery as the main reason. Andrew and Lauren finalized their divorce in November of that year. In the divorce settlement, there was a strict stipulation that lasted until January 2015, which stated that Simon was required to stay away from the couple's son, Adam, or face a $50,000 penalty.
An heir is born
Lauren gave birth to their son Eric — named after Simon's father — on February 14, 2014. Fatherhood softened Simon. "People have asked me if I have changed since I have had Eric and of course you do, you can't help it," he told Daily Mail.
But the big life change wasn't easy for the couple. "During the first eight or nine months I was thinking, 'I don't think he likes me very much.' He does remind me of me when I was younger because he knows how to try it on and how to get away with things," he told Entertainment Tonight.
Regardless, he's hopeful that his son will take over his business one day. "I actually think it's [his son] probably the best incentive I've ever had to keep everything running as well as I possibly can over the next few years," he revealed to Extra.
While exciting, Eric's birth was overshadowed by the affair that started it all. "It is not something I am proud of or wanted to happen in terms of hurting anyone. It just happened," Simon told The Mirror. In the past few years, there have been reports that Simon and Lauren's ex, Andrew, have buried the hatchet. What's done is done.
Now, all eyes are on the loving couple as they continue to date. Are wedding bells in their future? On an episode of Britain's Got Talent in May 2018, Simon bashfully responded to his fellow judge's plea for a romantic proposal. Well, their response says it all:
Time will tell if the music exec spills even more deets about his girlfriend on the 16th season of America's Got Talent this summer.
