There are tons of different facial hair removal methods for women, including laser hair removal, waxing, epilators, dermaplaning, and tweezing. As a Latina with dark, thick hair and light skin, I can assure you, I've tried them all. I've spent the last decade testing every at-home facial hair removal method with varying degrees of success. Some facial hair removal methods are quick and effective, but too painful to keep up with regularly. Others are less painful, but require more time each week to achieve the best results. All facial hair removal methods have their drawbacks, which is why it might take a few tries to find the one that works best for you.

Various other editors, testers, and dermatologists also helped, exploring new hair removal devices and old tried-and-tested methods to find the best ones for every facial hair type and concern. Finally, I pulled in a few experts to find out which methods they recommend the most to their clients with facial hair. Each method has its pros and cons, so finding the right one depends on your pain tolerance, budget, and how often you'll actually use it. Dermaplaning Tool

Dermaplaning is by far my favorite way to get rid of any unwanted facial hair, but it does take some practice to do it right without cutting your face. If you're new to dermaplaning, it's basically just a fancy word for shaving your face with a single-blade razor. The razor removes the peach fuzz while also exfoliating the top layer of the skin, leaving it feeling super soft and smooth.

These facial razors feel light in your hand, which is helpful because you also want to use a light hand when shaving the face. A good rule of thumb is to use about half the pressure you use when you shave your legs when shaving the face. If you feel the blade cutting into your skin, you're doing too much. You want to gently graze the surface of your skin and let the blade do the work, not your hand.

We like that the blade is the perfect size to get in between your eyebrows and on the sides of your nose. It's sharp without being too dangerous for a dermaplaning newbie. These are essentially single use razors, so you may notice that the blade gets dull after one to two uses, but it comes in a pack of 12 so one pack should last you six to 12 months. The trick to getting a close shave is to hold the razor a slight angle while pulling the skin taut. Once you get the hang of it, dermaplaning takes less than five minutes and is definitely the best pain-free facial hair removal method we've come across.

The fabric strips are a little big to use on your face, especially on the upper lip, but if you cut them in half, they work perfectly. We found that if we didn't get a good grip on the strip, we ended up missing some hairs and had to go in again with a fresh swipe of sugar wax. With some practice, our technique improved over time and soon enough it only took us five minutes to wax the lower half of our face.

Facial Hair Remover

This little handheld device is better, faster, and less painful than using tweezers. It takes some practice to get the hang of, but once you do, it quickly removes all the hair on your face – even the near invisible tiny ones – in just a few minutes. All you have to do is bend the spring into a "U" shape and twist the handles inward and outward while moving the device up and down against your skin. There's no mess, no chemicals, and no risk of irritating or cutting your skin. It feels like little pin pricks, and we found that it's most painful above the lip and at the corners of the mouth. It doesn't hurt nearly as bad as waxing or epilating, but you are ripping the hair out at the root, so you can expect that the first time will sting. But the more you use this, the less painful it becomes, so stick it out!

This device is great for removing unwanted hair in a large area, but it's not very precise. The spring pulls out any hair in its path, so we suggest avoiding the area around your eyelashes, eyebrow and hairline. You can use the spring on the forehead, but only in the center, away from any hair that you don't want to remove.

IPL Long-lasting Laser Hair Removal Device

Another one of our favorite laser hair removal devices is this one from Braun. We like this model because it features three modes (normal, gentle, extra gentle) for a comfortable and efficient lasering experience, even in sensitive areas like the face. If you're new to laser hair removal, the sensitive skin mode provides a virtually pain-free session, perfect for first-time users. It comes with four device heads to use across your entire body, including two precision heads ideal for the chin and upper lip. Many reviewers say they saw visible results in three uses or less, and once you complete the recommended seven sessions, the results last for nearly a year before having to do any touch up sessions.

For some people, epilation can be quite painful. We like this device because it's waterproof so you can use it in the bath or shower, which sometimes lessens the sting. The wide head removes hairs as short as 0.5 millimeters and makes quick work out of eliminating hairs on our sideburns and upper lip. It definitely takes some getting used to and it's not painless, but it is faster than using tweezers. and delivers similar results.

It can be tedious at times, but it is a better alternative to tweezing every single hair individually.

They also consulted with other editors who have also tried facial hair removal methods. Our team consulted with two dermatologists for the story.

What is the best way to remove facial hair from a woman's face?

There are many factors to consider in choosing the best hair removal method for any individual," says dermatologist Blair Murphy-Rose, MD. "Ultimately some of the major considerations include hair color, skin color, and the density of hair." Here are a few of the best and most common ways to remove hair from a woman's face:

Waxing
Waxing is a quick and effective way to remove large amounts of hair at once. Any area of your body can be waxed, including your face. Waxing provides four to six weeks of hair-free skin and some people even say regular waxes makes their hair more fine and soft. "Waxing with a reputable provider can be safely performed, although risks include skin irritation, redness, burning, scarring, discoloration," says Dr. Murphy-Rose. "Because waxing pulls hairs at the root, this method of hair removal lasts longer than some others like dermaplaning or shaving." Though she notes that waxing may make your skin more susceptive to ingrown hairs compared to dermaplaning.

Dermaplaning
Like we explained above, dermaplaning is similar to shaving in that you utilize a blade to effectively remove hair and dead skin. Many people prefer dermaplaning as a facial hair removal method because it smoothes the appearance of their skin. Though if you're not super experienced with this method, Dr. Murphy-Rose advises to go see a licensed professional for treatment. "Potential risks include skin irritation and nicks, which can increase the risk of infection," she says. "Dermaplaining essentially cuts the hairs at the level of the epidermis, so they are likely to grow back sooner compared to laser hair removal or waxing."

Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal uses highly concentrated light to penetrate hair follicles and inhibit future hair growth. This method works best on people who have light skin and dark hair; particularly those with thick, coarse and unruly dark chin/upper lip and sideburn hair. While laser hair removal isn't exactly permanent, it can effectively slow hair growth.

Though one note: dermatologists we spoke with say these gadgets are great for in-between in-office laser hair removal appointments, doctors say you should visit a board-certified dermatologist for a professional treatment plan. "Tell your doctor your ethnicity so they can recommend the right laser for your skin type," dermatologist Jeanine Downie, MD, previously told WH. "You want to receive the right treatment that does not harm your skin."
