1. Shop opening day of the Downtown Manitowoc Farmers' Market

The Downtown Manitowoc Farmers’ Market kicks off for the season May 4!

Fresh flowers, produce, breads, desserts, crafts and much more will be available every Saturday morning May through the end of October from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. along the riverfront at 720 Quay St.

2. Race to The Wharf’s Kentucky Derby Party

Grab your best hat and get ready for an afternoon sipping bottomless Mint Juleps!

The Wharf’s annual Kentucky Derby Party is set for May 4. This free event kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and continues through the 150th Run for the Roses at 5:50 p.m.

In addition to watching the races on indoor and outdoor screens, you can hear live music by 5 Car Studs, don your best derby outfit for a chance to win the “best hat” or “best bow tie” awards, and compete in “horse races” in the front lawn. Attendees can even snap a photo next to the large floral wall and visit the flowing champagne fountain.

3. Attend the USS Lagarto remembrance ceremony

Honor the crew of the Manitowoc-built submarine USS Lagarto, which was lost May 3, 1945, by attending the annual USS Lagarto remembrance ceremony from 1 to 2 p.m. May 4. This event is open and free to the public and takes place on the Manitowoc Riverwalk right outside the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, 75 Maritime Drive, by the USS Cobia.

4. Catch the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble’s concert

The Lakeshore Wind Ensemble’s 40th anniversary concert season concludes May 4 with “An American Salute.”

Conductor Jeremiah Eis and the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble will salute our nation, with a special focus on World War II veterans and music from the era.

Throughout the performance, you can expect selections including Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” the big-band era and films including “Saving Private Ryan” and “1941.”

Tickets are $20 for the main floor and mezzanine, $15 for the balcony and $10 for students. They can be purchased at cccshows.org or the Capitol Civic Centre box office, 913 S. Eighth St.

5. See the Rahr-West Art Museum’s newest exhibit

“Shadows of Industrialization,” a photography and multimedia project by Barbara Miner, winner of the 2023 Rahr-West Art Museum Juried Exhibition, opens May 5.

This exhibit explores the aftermath of deindustrialization in Milwaukee. To celebrate the exhibit’s opening, the Rahr-West is hosting a gallery walk and opening reception from 1 to 3 p.m. May 5. This event is free, open to the public, and does not require registration. The Rahr-West is at 610 N. Eighth St.
