13 Reasons Why has had a number of big moments over the years, but season four had some of its most nerve-wracking and heart-pounding episodes of the entire series. While the kids are normally on the run from the law or solving a brand new mystery, one of the biggest issues at hand was school safety this season. 13 Reasons Why has always tackled current events even if they were a little hard to watch. So it was interesting to see them have a whole episode dedicated to a school shooting happening at Liberty High. With various clues lying around about who could be behind it and what their motive might be, the group tried their best to figure it out before it was too late. In the end, the big reveal was one of the show's biggest twists yet.

So who was the shooter? And what was their motive?

Here's everything you need to know about the shooter in season four of 13 Reasons Why.

*Major spoilers for season 4 of 13 Reasons Why below!*

How did the shooting start?

The day of the shooting was up being pretty normal for the students at Liberty High. However, things quickly turned serious when they heard over the loud speaker that the school was under lockdown. While many of the students believed that it was a practice run, the teachers revealed that they were also just as surprised to hear that it was taking place and had everyone take cover. Many of the kids, who weren't with teachers or other adults at the time, didn't know that it was real until they heard gunshots in the hallway.

Who was the shooter in season four of 13 Reasons Why?

Throughout the entire episode, Tony believed that it was Tyler who was the school shooter. After finding photos of guns in his notebook and remembering how he once brought a gun to the school dance at the end of season 2, he believed that they weren't able to help him enough and brought the evidence to a teacher. However, it was later revealed not to be Tyler.

Clay decided to go out and try to confront the shooter on his own to put an end to everything and be the hero that he always felt he was. However, upon heading out into the hallway, he started to hallucinate and see himself as the shooter. Principal Bolan was able to get his attention and brought him into his office. Principal Bolan revealed that the shooting was actually not real and that local police officers were shooting blanks to make it seem real.

The whole idea was to help "teach" the students about safety during a school shooting and to discover what steps that the school needs to take before a real one happens.

What happened afterwards?

After announcing that the "lockdown" was over, Clay confronts Principal Bolan for having the idea in the first place and causing mental distress to students through the experiment. Clay then grabbed an officer’s gun and broke down. An officer attacjed him and he later gets taken to a hospital.
