Shoes Can Be Art, This Instagram Is Proof

While studying art history at the Chelsea College of Art and New York University, Devon Head had a unique advantage over her classmates: she could easily identify a work of art if she recognized the subjects' shoes.

Fascinated by the fashions in 15th- and 17th-century paintings, Head began collecting her favorite shoes from different works and posting them on her Instagram account, @shoesinart, which now has more than 20,000 followers.

Although she left the academic world, Head still uses her background in art history in her job as an assistant to stylist Elissa Santisi. "Art history has taught me so much with regards to styling," she says. "There is thought and reason behind each detail."

The styling decisions in the works Head highlights still hold up. Champagne satin slippers affixed with silver buckles just work with floor-length pink dresses (a tip we picked up from an Alfonso Savini babe), and strappy, rose leather sandals go great with gauzy white skirts (thanks, Diana the Huntress).
