Shipshewana Mayfest kicks off May with family fun

Apr. 27—SHIPSHEWANA — The first weekend of May will be filled with family fun in downtown Shipshewana, as the town's annual Mayfest celebration will be taking place.

Tobi Oxenrider, director of the Shipshewana Retail Merchants Association, stated in a press release, "Shipshewana Mayfest is a good old-fashioned, small-town event that kicks of the spring season. It offers our businesses in Shipshewana an opportunity to support their local residents as well as visitors with a fun and family-friendly event."

Events will take place May 3 and 4 on Morton Street. There will be live entertainment, sports tournaments, a children's fun run and a 5K, plus the Mayfest parade, a cornhole tournament, kids' games, tractor pulling, dancing, music and food.

Twelve food vendors will be on hand. some of the vendors include: Hilty's Backwood Wings, Kings BBQ, Kukui's, Otto's Elephant Ears, Secret Recipe, Nelson's, Smothered & Covered Fries, Randy Mullett Popcorn and S&R Concessions.

On Friday morning, the festival's entertainment will include Jim Barron and the Westview band and choir. And then later, in the evening at 5:45 p.m., Acoustic Harmony and Lonesome Road Bluegrass will perform.

Saturday begins with a pancake and sausage breakfast and bake sale at 7 a.m. in the Main Tent.

A kid's fun run and 5K run will commence at 8 a.m.

The Mayfest Parade will step off at 10 a.m.

There will be a variety of activities through the day, including live music all day in the Main Tent. Lonesome Road Bluegrass will end the entertainment with a performance from 7 to 8 p.m.
