This weekend marks the unofficial end of the summer season, but your sunkissed skin may say otherwise. Shimmery makeup is the perfect way to hang on to carefree summer days and even extend your look into fall. We caught up with Tamah, celebrity makeup artist to stars like Allison Williams, Alexa Chung, and Liv Tyler, for tips on adding a little shimmer to your Labor Day look and beyond.

“A little tan and a little shimmer are a match made in heaven!” says Tamah. “Just like all your makeup, make sure your products are the right tone to compliment your tan.” When it comes to texture for eyes and cheeks, Tamah prefers using creamy products. “I know they can be intimidating to use for some people, [but] creams blend into the skin and are bit less obvious,” she says. “They are also easier to build on — you can layer thin layers on top of each other and blend them easily. Powder sits on top of the skin, can be harder to blend, and can be a bit more ostentatious.” So stick to creamy formulas for daytime. RMS Beauty Living Luminizer ($38) is Tamah’s multipurpose go-to for eyes and cheekbones, but you could also try Nars The Multiple in Copacabana ($39). For a night out, Tamah says you can layer powder shimmer over your cream products to give your cheeks or eyes more impact and longevity. Try Tom Ford Cream and Powder Eye Color ($60), a two-in-one duo designed for layering.

We know frosted lips have scary, ‘80s connotations, but Tamah says not to fear. “’Frosted’ is just the old school way of calling something shimmery. They describe the same thing: A product that reflects light.” With may brands releasing shimmery lipsticks and lip glosses, she says the key to keeping it fresh is all in the placement. “Dab a bit of shimmery lipcolor into the center of your mouth and press you lips together,” says Tamah. “To move the pigment around, add color as needed, but avoid over doing it. You don’t want to coat your lips in shimmer, as much as you want to add a bit of sparkle.” Tamah likes Lipstick Queen Let Them Eat Cake ($50). We suggest YSL Gloss Volupte in Rose Lurex ($32) worn solo or over another shade.

Note that a little shimmer goes a long way: “Too much can look juvenile and overdone,” says Tamah. But there is a way to test the waters without going overboard. To play it safe, stick to one feature and keep the rest of your face looking healthy and natural. Tamah says matte or dewy skin is just a matter of preference and that both look great with added shimmer.
