Sherwin-Williams Reveals Its 2024 Color of the Year

A heavenly color is about to take center stage, gently urging you to refresh your interiors. Sherwin-Williams announced Upward (SW 6239) as its Color of the Year for 2024, and the relaxed blue practically embodies the sensation of taking a slow breath of crisp air.

The pale blue with gray undertones fosters harmony. "It brings to life that carefree, sunny day energy that elicits a notion of contentment and peace," Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, said in a press release. "With this color, we invite our consumers to take a pause and infuse a new sense of ease and possibility into their spaces—one that doesn't overwhelm, but rather establishes meditation and tranquility."

In Sherwin-Williams' biennial trend report, Colormix Forecast 2024, Anthology: Volume One, the company explains that Upward offers a soft push forward. The cool-toned hue follows the brand's 2023 Color of the Year, a blush-beige that inspired warmth and empathy. "In the first half of the decade, greens and earthy tones took over," Wadden tells House Beautiful of the ongoing trend toward colors inspired by nature that took off in 2020. "But now, blues and ethereal tones are going to be the new go-tos, so we knew from the start we wanted to highlight a blue color."

Wadden also points to the resurfaced popularity of the coastal chic design style, a trend that led to the selection of Upward. "It’s going to offer alternatives to the ever-popular farmhouse style that has been mainstream for so long, and Upward is the ideal color to incorporate in the home to create that beachy vibe," she explains.

Upward easily blends into various other aesthetics including grandmillenial and Art Deco. If you're eager to embrace the color in your home, consider using the hue in an accent wall or ceiling. Upward can also help refresh kitchen cabinetry, brighten up a bathroom vanity, make your front door stand out, or revive an old piece of furniture. Wadden recommends pairing Upward with other cool blue and green paints. Neutrals, from classic Tricorn Black to delicate gray Drift of Mist, can also enhance Upward's overall calming effect.

Not only is the color ripe for a home makeover, but it'll also be available to eat—well, sort of. Sherwin-Willims teamed up with the French pastry chef Dominique Ansel to create his first-ever vegan cronut. Inspired by Upward, the vegan cronut is available for a limited time (September 21 through September 24 from 8 a.m. ET until they’re sold out daily) at his namesake bakery in New York City. It's filled with coconut riz au lait (rice pudding) and topped with hand-glazed fondant—both infused with butterfly pea flower tea, brewed from a naturally blue blossom which mirrors Upward's hue.

Whether you're able to enjoy the vegan cronut, or just inspired to bring more serene hues into your home, get your creative home design juices flowing with these enchanting blue rooms.
