Every year, major paint brands announce the color they think will be most popular in the upcoming year. But now Sherwin-Williams is flipping the script and encouraging home owners to go against the trends by unveiling its least popular paint color—which the brand has named as Kingdom Gold.

The announcement is part of the brand's recent campaign coined "The Loneliest Color," which aims to highlight its most overlooked shades. The campaign's inaugural hue is a luminous, rich yellow with green undertones and high saturation.

Kingdom Gold is Sherwin-Williams' least tinted hue, meaning it's the shade with the fewest gallons of color created. Every year, the brand tints millions of gallons of paint in each of its top colors, which includes whites, grays, and other neutral tones. In comparison, less than 11,000 gallons of Kingdom Gold have been tinted over the last 14 years.

Incorporating Kingdom Gold in your home in small doses is a wonderful way to infuse your space with warmth. Use it to add color to a feature or accent wall to create a focal point in a larger, well-lit space. Offset the saturated hue by pairing it with neutrals, like off white and gray.

"Incorporating gold into a color collection is about finding the right balance and harmony with existing hues, the mood, the space, the light, and the desired impact,” Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams says in a press release. A unique hue like Kingdom Gold allows people to experiment with variations of complementary colors, textures, and decorative pieces, she adds.
