Shelter Dogs in Illinois Who Lack Adoption Applications Tug at Everyone's Heartstrings

There are thousands of dogs in shelters and rescues across the globe who are ready for their forever homes. Whether you're in the market for a couch potato or a hiking partner, you're bound to meet your perfect match at one of your local shelters. Learning about a dog's breed can be helpful in determining their personality and energy level, but you never truly know what you're getting until you bring your new friend home to decompress.

If you're feeling ready to take a chance on a shelter dog, browsing websites and social media is a great way to start. Those living near Pekin, Illinois, can even visit TAPS Animal Shelter, a no-kill animal rescue that's been saving lives since 1958. On December 28, the shelter staff shared a video of their dogs with zero adoption applications in hopes that potential adopters see them, but thousands of hearts have melted in the process. Each dog is as sweet as the last--and some of them are just puppies!

Aww! These poor pups look so hopeful when seeing their human friend at @tapspekinil, and I can only imagine how overjoyed they'll be when meeting their forever owners. Even though many of them have wagging tails already, nothing will compare to starting life in their perfect homes.

Unsurprisingly, commenters are leaving tons of love and praise for the shelter dogs and puppies. Hopefully, some of them visited the shelter to adopt them, too! From 3-month-old puppies to distinguished adult dogs like Vuitton, even this small selection of shelter pets shows that there's a wide variety out there.

Not All Shelter Animals Are Equally Likely to Get Adopted

As you may have noticed, though, many of the dogs featured in this video are Pit Bull breeds. That's an accurate reflection of what many animal shelters look like because some breeds, including Pitties, have more trouble getting adopted than other dogs. Breed isn't the only characteristic that can make it trickier to catch the eye of a potential adopter, though.

Black-colored pets, including both dogs and cats, statistically spend a longer time in shelters than pets with non-black fur. But truthfully--nothing is different about them besides their color! This discrimination likely has to do with the superstitions surrounding black cats and black-colored animals, as well as the difficulty of photographing black pets. As many animal shelter photographers have proven, the right adoption photo makes a world of difference!

Now that these overlooked shelter pups have been featured in a video, though, all of my fingers are crossed they're closer to finding their forever homes.
