Sheetz is coming to the Delaware border. We tried a few items from its menu.

Look out, Wawa. Sheetz is coming.

The Western Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain is opening its first location in Elkton, Maryland, close to Delaware’s border.

Like Wawa, the store offers made-to-go items and other convenience store staples.

As a Western Pennsylvania native, I thought it would be fitting to return to my roots and reacquaint myself with a few of Sheetz’s best-sellers to prepare you for the touchscreens and products ending in Z.

I am qualified: I even worked at Sheetz in high school, and I used to live off the breakfast sandwiches, hot and cold subs and pretzels.

And to make sure my picks are all family-friendly, I had my 11-year-old daughter weigh in as well.

So let’z dive in.

Nachos Grande

The nachos at Sheetz are sort of a staple at the store.  You can get just cheese and jalapenos, or you can add other toppings, some at an upcharge. We decided to get them with guac, salsa, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos and lettuce. The nachos are always a good treat, but my complaint with them stays the same. The toppings get stuck to the lid. But if you can eat them before they become soggy, they are a solid pick.

Sheetz Pizza

Maybe I was not the best one to review gas station pizza, as I am a bit of a pizza snob. But the pizza is similar in quality to a frozen pizza you would buy at the grocery store. The personal size is a good serving portion; it just was not my favorite.

Or death dogs, whatever you prefer. The economy dinner always has been the Sheetz hotdog. I decided to get the infamous chili dog. If you are expecting a gourmet hot dog, then this one is not for you. But if you need a quick fix, go for it.

Premium Sampler

We ordered Boneless Bitez, Broccoli Cheddar Bitez and Pork Stickerz in our sampler box. My daughter was not a fan of the Pork Stickerz, but I thought they were good. The cheddar bites and boneless wings also were quite tasty. If you cannot decide what you like, there is a nice mix.

Frozen Hot Chocolate

I may have an unhealthy obsession with frozen hot chocolate. So we decided to try one and added brownie bites. While my daughter loved it, I thought it was too much chocolate for my liking. But wanting to make sure I was able to recommend a frozen drink, I contacted my sister. She said every other week she gets a frozen banana dark chocolate mocha with extra espresso. She said the Sheetz version of the drink is better than Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. We don’t often agree so drink at your own risk.
