It’s been over three decades since Stevie Nicks released her first solo album, Bella Donna, and finally, the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman is getting the accolade she’s long deserved. Yesterday, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced that 70-year-old Nicks would be one of the 2019 inductees alongside the Cure, Radiohead, Janet Jackson, Def Leppard, Roxy Music, and the Zombies. Though Fleetwood Mac was inducted in 1998, this honor is hers and hers alone.
Nicks has imprinted her voice on the pages of music history with hits like “Edge of Seventeen” and “Stand Back,” but she’s contributed to the fashion world, too. Her enchanting, witchy wardrobe of lacy frocks, fringed scarves, and lots and lots of hats has inspired generations to dress like they’re dancing onstage, banging on a tambourine. The Stevie Nicks look has stormed the runways in a myriad of ways through the years, whether it was Anna Sui’s tribute collection for Fall 1997 or Isaac Mizrahi’s interpretation of Nicks’s personal style that same season.
For the millennial generation, Nicks’s wardrobe has been remixed by designers like Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent, Kate and Laura Mulleavy at Rodarte, and Stuart Vevers at Coach. In 2015, Michael Kors put his spin on the songbird’s favorite peasant dress silhouette, while at Chloé that same year, Clare Waight Keller dressed her models in greatcoats and skinny neck scarves that recalled some of her famous stage ensembles.
