Shay Mitchell Says “Pretty Little Liars” Helped Prepare Her for Motherhood
Shay Mitchell may not be returning for season two of You, considering her character Peach Salinger met her fate at the hands of Joe Goldberg halfway through the first installment, but one of her previous roles did teach her a lot about her latest chapter in life: motherhood. (Spoiler alert: It's not Peach.)
Shay chatted with Elle about her travel line, BÉIS, and said that her work experience on Pretty Little Liars was "invaluable" for her jetsetting career. “Being on Pretty Little Liars and going from 0-100 really quick, it forced me to learn how to prioritize my time," Shay said. "We had such long shoot dates. When we weren’t shooting, we were promoting the show and doing photo shoots. And we had to travel so much! It taught me how to organize my time. Especially now that I’ve added a baby to my life, that’s been invaluable.” That's just as important as eluding "A," right Shay?
Shay launched BÉIS in late 2018, and has since built a thriving brand of affordable, stylish travel and organizational gear that encourages its customers to see the world — or hit the gym, or have a staycation. While she stayed close to home immediately after the birth of her daughter Atlas in October, the two recently embarked on their first flight, from Los Angeles to Vancouver, and they've also jetted off to Paris. Shay told Elle that she was thrilled to have a new travel buddy. "I’m more excited to fly with her than I’ve ever been on my own. Plus, I get to test out the new BÉIS diaper bag with actual diapers and an actual infant… I had to practice on a stuffed animal, because she wasn’t born yet when I designed it. But I just knew she’d travel with me early, even on planes.” Baby Atlas is living up to her name and getting stamps in her passport before she's even six months old!
And Atlas isn't the only one getting travel lessons from an expert like Shay; her Pretty Little Liars costar Ashley Benson learned a very important one while the two were traveling together: disinfect everything! “I’ve never gotten sick while traveling, and I swear it’s because I wipe everything down on a plane. During Pretty Little Liars, I actually showed Ashley [Benson] how to travel, and now she’s a clean freak like me.”
It looks like all that time in Rosewood really paid off for Shay, and not just in the world of motherhood. She recently won the Revolve Entrepreneur of the Year award for her hard work, and we can't wait to see where Shay, Atlas, and their BÉIS bags go next!
