Though Shawn Mendes is currently one of the biggest pop stars in the world, he didn't always want to be a singer. Before making it big, Shawn wanted to be an actor and even auditioned for the Disney channel back home in Toronto. But it was his 6-second covers of popular songs posted to Vine that got Shawn noticed. In August 2014, he became the third most-followed musician on Vine. His feat got him noticed by an artist manager who signed him to a record label and his career took off from there. Now, it's hard to turn on the radio without hearing one of Shawn's songs. At 20, he's released countless chart-topping singles. But being so famous doesn't leave Shawn much time to focus on other things.
When Shawn became famous, he was in the middle of his high school career. He ultimately had to leave high school, Pine Ridge Secondary School, during his junior year in order to go on tour. Shawn continued his education by taking online courses, which allowed him to graduate with his class in 2016.
Probably due to commitments as a famous singer, Shawn never went to college. Though, one time he did say he wanted to attend the University of Toronto because it looks like Hogwarts. It's safe to say he's definitely a Harry Potter fan.
Im going to university of Toronto, reason being - it looks like Hogwarts #uft— Shawn Mendes (@ShawnMendes) October 22, 2012
In 2014, after leaving school, Shawn told TigerBeat he missed the classroom setting. "I always want to be there. When you're at school, you don't think it, but learning is the best thing ever. I really miss that whole experience of being in the classroom."
Shawn may have had to skip out on the classroom and college, but it's kind of like he studies abroad every day, as he travels the globe performing and meeting his fans.
