Shawn Mendes’s MTV VMAs Suit Has a Split Personality
The Canadian singer Shawn Mendes wore a two-tone design by Paul Smith at the 2018 MTV VMA's in New York City.
In menswear, it’s all about the details—a killer color can make a good suit great, for example. But how to choose that just-right shade? Perhaps you don’t have to choose after all. At this year’s MTV Video Music Awards in New York City tonight, Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes forwent a monochromatic suit on the red carpet, instead choosing a two-toned design that combined the best of both worlds—a classic navy, and a more handsome hunter green.
Wearing a double-breasted suit by Paul Smith, Mendes wore a split-personality design that was originally shown on the designer’s Fall 2018 runway show during Paris Fashion Week (though it was shown in different color combos—Mendes must have gotten the custom treatment.) To keep eyes on the statement blazer, he paired it with navy pants and a slightly speckled button-up shirt for a dash of textural interest, and then finished off the look with sleek back pointed-toe boots. If you remember this year’s Billboard Awards, Mendes made the case for heeled boots—so it’s safe to say he’s now mastered both the shoe and suit game.
