Shawn Mendes Says His Relationship With Camila Cabello Is ‘Definitely Not a Publicity Stunt’

When you break it down, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello's relationship has followed a fairly relatable trajectory: They became friends after meeting at work, got closer, did a project together, and then eventually realized that there was more to their feelings and started dating. Of course, the job where they met was opening for Taylor Swift on tour, and the project they first did together was a hit song—but you get the drift.

Now they're one of the most talked-about young couples around with their every move being scrutinized by fans and the media. They're walking around holding hands, steaming up the stage at the VMAs with "Señorita," and making fun of the people making fun of the way they kiss with an Instagram video.

A paparazzi crew at LAX got Mendes to open up about his girlfriend as he walked through the terminal. (Honestly, he's so nice about being pestered that we love him even more now.) The reporter asks Mendes about the rumors that his and Cabello's relationship is fake—and he replies that it's "definitely not a publicity stunt." Watch the interaction below.

Mendes also confirmed another relationship milestone when he says, "Camila's parents? I've known them for a long time." However, he remains silent when asked if the two are exchanging "I love you"s.

Chances are we won't be getting an answer to that question any time soon. "Love is the most sacred, precious thing to me," Cabello said in a recent interview with Elle. "I want to always feel like my love is between me and that person, and never belonging to anyone else. As much as I love my fans, and as much as I love people, I like to live my life as normally as possible. In a relationship, it makes me feel uncomfortable to invite everyone in on that."
