Shawn Mendes and Khalid Sang "Youth" With the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Show Choir at the BBMAs 2018

"You can't take my youth away."

Shawn Mendes and Khalid joined forces with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas show choir for a powerful performance Sunday night at the Billboard Music Awards. They sung the duet Shawn and Khalid released a few weeks ago, "Youth," a particularly poignant song in the aftermath of Friday's shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas.

The choir of students wore sweatshirts that read "Youth," and performed with the two musicians, ending the performance with all their arms around each other as they sang, "You can't take my youth away." The sweatshirts are part of Shawn and Khalid's merch for the new song; they're donating a portion of proceeds to March for Our Lives, an organization created by Marjory Stoneman Douglas students in Parkland, Florida. Khalid also wore a shirt that read, "Protect our guns children."

Shawn previously told Zane Lowe on Beats Radio 1 about the collaboration with Khalid, saying, "I said, 'when we get together, we have to make a statement. We have to move. We have to write about what’s going on in life and how the youth is feeling because I think we have the voice to do that.'" He also told Zane that the song was directly inspired by being in London around the time of the London Bridge terrorist attack last June and the bombing at Ariana Grande's concert in Manchester.

Fans praised the performance on Twitter, with one writing, "What khalid and shawn mendes are doing is so brave and amazing. as a student who grew up seeing so many gun tradegies this breaks & heals my heart. we must do whatever we can to prevent another child from losing their youth again." Another added, "Khalid and Shawn Mendes performing ‘Youth’ with the survivors from the shooting was so so powerful."
