Shawn Mendes Falls Down Onstage at a Show in Quebec

"LOL yep. I’m ok but also that was insane."

During a recent interview with The Project, Shawn has addressed what caused his now meme-worthy spill on stage.

As he explained to The Project host Dave Thorton, the fall was actually a result of the singer trying to impress Dave Grohl, the lead singer of rock band the Foo Fighters. Shawn recounted that earlier in the festival, fans had captured the moment when Dave praised Shawn, calling him a "bad mother-f*cker."

"I was so excited that he was there, that I was like 'I'm gonna jump off stage,'" Shawn said of the incident. "I'm like 'I have to just cause he's here.' And uh, I miscalculated how high the stage was from the ground." He fortunately wasn't injured, but did admit that the jump was "a bad idea."

Lucky for Shawn, it appears the jump might have been worth it, as photograph Josiah Van Dien captured the two meeting in a post on Instagram.

One of the perils of being a musician is the ever-present threat of losing your balance or misjudging the amount of space you’ve got onstage and falling right off. It’s happened to plenty of performers, including Beyoncé and Justin Bieber. Now Shawn Mendes is the latest celeb to have suffered a little accident onstage, but he’s taking it in stride — and fans are already making a meme out of the dramatic moment.

Shawn retweeted a video of himself tumbling onstage during a performance in Quebec, Canada, over the weekend. In the clip, he’s singing (sans guitar) and then dramatically jumps down to the lower stage, losing his balance and hitting the floor. Ever the pro, though, he keeps on singing and makes his way back up, looking relatively unharmed. If we’re being honest, we did laugh at the accident… just a little. But it's OK because Shawn did, too: “LOL yep. I’m ok but also that was insane,” Shawn tweeted.

Of course, his fans wasted no time in turning the fall into a meme. One fan converted it to a Star Wars homage, making the fall parallel to when Luke Skywalker and his friends fall into the garbage compactor. Others paired it with viral falling videos. And of course, someone couldn’t resist the urge to compare Shawn's movement to Ariana Grande’s dimension-hopping “No Tears Left to Cry” video.

This isn’t the first time Shawn’s been meme’d by his fans. In April, he retweeted a meme created by a fan after Shawn expressed surprise over how hard his yoga workout was, proving that he's always down for a joke at his own expense.
