Shawn Mendes Responds to Fans Who Were Upset After He Didn't Answer a Question About "Señorita"

"There was no bad intention here."

Shawn Mendes is speaking out against negativity.

Fans were upset after a Q+A session when the singer-songwriter seemingly dodged a question about "Señorita," his collab with Camila Cabello. Shawn soon took to Twitter to address the conflict, explaining the reason behind his response.

"Hey! There was no bad intention here," Shawn wrote on Sunday morning. "If you were there you would have known it was the last question & that’s why I decided to turn it into a light hearted funny goodbye! Sorry if that upset anyone, I adore you guys! No need for any negativity. ❤️"

Many of Shawn's fans soon weighed in to express their support. "He doesn’t have to share his whole life with his fans. He needs some privacy too," one person wrote. Another tweeted: "CAN PEOPLE REALIZE THAT YOUR PERSONAL LIFE IS YOUR LIFE AND YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT NOT TO TELL US THINGS."

As we previously noted, it's perfectly fair for celebrities to decline a question (or say no to a selfie); they aren't required to respond to everything asked of them. It's clear that Shawn loves his fans, and implementing boundaries from time to time doesn't mean he loves them any less.

Ever since Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello released their steamy collab “Señorita,” fans have had a lot of questions about the pair, the song, and what it all means. But when one person asked Shawn about the duet at a recent Q+A, the singer’s answer proved to be less than satisfying for some fans.

As noted by Twitter account @trackingsm, Shawn answered some questions during his recent tour stop in Tampa, Florida on July 27. However, after a fan asked what inspired him to write “Señorita,” he didn’t exactly offer any clarity.

“What inspired me to write ‘Señorita?’” Shawn echoes in the video with a laugh before standing up. “I love you guys, have a great time.” From there, he blows a kiss to the audience and exits the stage, while the crowd erupts in laughter.

Now, it’s entirely possible that Shawn had run out of time, or that there was some other explanation for why he didn’t answer the fan’s question. (It’s also entirely OK if he simply didn’t want to; celebrities certainly aren’t required to answer everything asked of them.)

Nevertheless, fans were pretty unhappy with the video, and took to the comments to share their reactions. One Twitter user called Shawn’s response “kinda rude,” while another expressed empathy for the fan who was shut down. Some fans pointed out that the question wasn’t even about Camila, but his response seemingly kiiiinda took it there. “That was a perfectly normal question,” one fan concluded.

It’s hard to say for sure why Shawn didn’t answer the question about “Señorita,” and while it’s understandable for fans to be disappointed, it’s worth noting that the singer-songwriter has opened up in the past about anxiety, the pressures of fame, and living life in the public eye — so maybe everyone should cut him a little slack here. In an April 2019 interview, Shawn described feeling insecure because of social media, explaining: “I’m scared of social media and how much it affects me. It’s literally become infused with who I am. For the first time I realized how many people are listening.” The bottom line is that celebrities are people too, and it’s important to respect their boundaries just as you would anyone else.
