Shawn Mendes Channels Your Favorite ’90s Heartthrob at the VMAs
Rachel Hahn
Shawn Mendes is officially in his “natural rockstar phase,” as his stylist Tiffany Briseno explained at the start of his tour this summer. That meant the (sometimes custom made) T-shirts and leather jackets that Mendes wore onstage by brands such as Saint Laurent and Paul Smith, paid homage to Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, and Jimi Hedrix as well as the fictional characters of The Outsiders and Grease.
Now, though, Mendes seems to be pulling from a whole new set of references on the MTV VMAs red carpet this year: ’90s heartthrobs. Mendes took to the red carpet in a deep green Dolce & Gabbana suit, but he left his sheer black shirt unbuttoned to reveal some David Yurman jewelry (he layered a black beaded necklace with a green stone pendant) and a classic ribbed white tank top. Obscuring a dress shirt in favor of a ribbed tank top is a subtle styling move that wouldn’t look out of place on peak-era Brad Pitt or River Phoenix, but Mendes’s formal spin on it makes the nostalgic trick all his own.

Matt Harmon and Scott Pianowski reveal the post-draft fantasy power rankings.
