Sharon Stone Reveals Big Pay Gap Between Her and Former Co-Star Michael Douglas

The two were compensated very differently for their work on the 1992 thriller 'Basic Instinct.'

Sharon Stone made another wild confession about her financial history.

This time though, it wasn't about her losing all her savings in a bank crash, but rather the massive pay gap that existed between her and former Basic Instinct co-star, Michael Douglas.

During the New York Women In Film & Television’s 43^rd annual Muse Awards lunch on March 28 at New York City's famed Cipriani restaurant, Stone revealed that she was only paid $500,000 for her part in the 1992 thriller, while Douglas took home nearly 30x that.

“Michael Douglas made $14 million. Now, I was new. I was new and he was a very big star,” she told the crowd on Tuesday.

Despite being so new to the scene, Stone's talent was clearly genuine as her breakout role in the Basic Instinct led to multiple award nominations–but no wins or payout bonus.

Stone also explained that during production, she had to put up with a producer that mistakenly called her "Karen" for the "entirety of the movie," something she recalled as mortifying.

“Even at the Governor’s Ball [after the Oscars], he still called me ‘Karen!’ And, I carried that humiliation really deeply within me — even though my name wasn’t on the poster,” she said.

Stone was honored at the recent event for her work as an actor, artist, humanitarian, alongside another big name, mostly female TV executives and film producers, including Orange is the New Black alum Danielle Brooks, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Janet Yang and actress/producer/activist Freida Pinto, among others.
