Sharks: Two Attacks At Florida Beach

The shark saga continues.

Two shark attacks happened at Florida’s New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County over the weekend.

Both victims were surfers.

Maybe we shouldn’t be too shocked, considering the county has been dubbed “the shark bite capital of the world.”

WESH 2 reported in the video above, that last Friday a 21-year-old surfer suffered “serious injuries” to his foot and was treated at the local hospital.

“He will be okay but he did have some serious injuries to his foot," said the reporter in the video.

Just the next day, another surfer was bitten at the same beach, resulting in "superficial" wounds on his back. The second victim was also treated at a local hospital.

Reports said the attacks were the second and third of their kind in Volusia County so far this year.

According to Fox 35 Orlando, New Smyrna Beach was home to seven shark bites in 2022, and 16 shark attacks the year before.

Additionally, other recent New Smyrna shark attacks include a surfer bitten last year and treated at the scene for “minor injuries” and a surfing teen who was bitten on the arm, requiring nine stitches.

The International Shark Attack File is the world's only scientifically documented, comprehensive database of all known shark attacks.

According to the database, Volusia County has had 343 unprovoked shark attacks since 1882, more than double Florida's Brevard County at 156 and Palm Beach at 82.
