Sharks Attack Two Surf Buddies Back-to-Back (Video)

New Smyrna Beach, Florida – aka the “shark bite capital of the world.”

It’s not uncommon to hear about shark attacks here – especially during the summer season, in which surfers and beachgoers flood the waters, as well as the grey suits.

And two surf buddies just recently joined the shark bite club, one right after the other.

“This surfer knows how lucky he is,” says a newscaster from ABC.

“This could’ve been so much worse. His friend had just been bitten, yet still, he went out to surf in the exact same spot.

“So far this year, more than half of the reported shark attacks in the United States have been here in Florida.”

As for the victim in one of the attacks, here's what he had to say:

“Got a couple good waves in, and one of my last waves, I stepped on something not too nice,” says one of the victims, Brandon Boncore.

“I felt something kind of clamp on me, on my leg. I took my right leg and just kicked it off of me.

“Any time you walk into those waters, I might see four or five sharks each day.”

Boncore underwent surgery for his wounds.

Weeks before that, his friend, Chris Popisil was surfing and attacked in the same area.

“I saw my foot in its mouth, and I saw its teeth,” said Popisil.

“It all happened in like literally a second.”

Of the 30 shark attacks reported in the US this year, 16 have been in Florida.

As for a reason for the uptick in shark activity?

“We might expect to see some of the sharks that are typically in warmer water move north,” says Dr. Gavin Naylor, Director of the Florida Program for Shark Research, referring to warmer waters as a result of climate change.
