Shannen Doherty Calls Out ’Ridiculous’ Cancel Culture in New IG Post: ‘We Are Entitled to Our Opinions’

• “We do not all have to think the same,” the Beverly Hills 90210 actress wrote in her caption, adding that we are all entitled to our own opinions.

• Doherty said she's considering starting her own “truly honest” podcast that welcomes all voices.

Cancel culture has been on the rise in recent years, becoming a tool for ostracism in which the public calls out or boycotts a figure so much so that they are de-platformed or removed of celebrity status. The movement has received both support and criticism from all sides of the political spectrum, and celebrities like Shannen Doherty are calling it “disturbing.”

“Obviously I’ve had some battles to fight. Some not done yet,” the actress wrote in a new makeup-free Instagram post. Doherty is currently battling stage IV breast cancer. “I’ve also just been in observation mode. Observing what our world is becoming. What my country is becoming and listening.”

Doherty said she has “strong opinions” on certain topics, despite cancel culture. “Even in the ridiculous cancel culture we live in, I still will always have my own opinion regardless of what others think,” she said. “I am trying to figure out my own voice and how to express it.”

“Cancel culture….so over it. We are entitled to our opinions. We do NOT all have to think the same,” she continued. “It’s disturbing that anyone feels compelled to be silent in fear of repercussions (unless you’re a racist a** then yeah be quiet) but we are human. We think, feel, believe differently and that should be valued by all.”

The actress said she's considering starting her own “truly honest” podcast that welcomes all opinions. “For now, I wish you all peace, compassion and respect for ALL living things,” she said.

Doherty was inspired to speak out about cancel culture in light of her fight with stage IV breast cancer, which she was first diagnosed with in 2015. The actress went into remission in 2017, but then her cancer returned as stage IV in 2020.

In October 2021, Doherty opened up about getting through the impossible. “For breast cancer awareness month, I’d like to share more of my own personal journey from my first diagnosis to my second. Is it all pretty? NO but it’s truthful and my hope in sharing is that we all become more educated, more familiar with what cancer looks like,” she wrote in an Instagram post alongside several images of her receiving treatment and recovering.

“I hope I encourage people to get mammograms, to get regular checkups, to cut [through] the fear and face whatever might be in front of you,” she said. The actress said she was able to look back at small moments throughout her breast cancer journey and laugh at herself. “Finding humor helped get me thru what seemed impossible. I hope we all find humor in the impossible,” she said.
