Shakira embraced her independence after splitting from Gerard Piqué, her partner of 11 years.
The singer recently opened up to Enrique Acevedo of Canal Estrellas about life after her highly publicized breakup with the Spanish soccer player, with whom she shares sons Milan and Sasha. In the interview, which was conducted in Spanish and translated by People, Shakira revealed that she's "on the way up" and has "managed to feel that I am enough," a feat she once "never thought would happen."
"I've always been very emotionally dependent [on men]–I have to confess this. I was in love with love," the Grammy-winning artist said. "One way or another, I've managed to learn it from another perspective and feel that I'll be fine on my own. When a woman has to face [hardships] in life, she comes out stronger. When you come out stronger it means you're learning to recognize your weaknesses and accept your vulnerability."
She added that her children have played a big part in her newfound confidence. "I feel complete—because I feel like I can depend on myself and I have two kids who depend on me," she said. "I have to be stronger than a lion. That strength, in order for it to be real and not a façade … it needs to be the result of a great pain. Accepting that pain and tolerating the frustration because there are things in life that don't turn out the way we want them to."
She continued, "There are dreams that shatter and we need to pick up the pieces and put them back together ourselves."
The former couple announced their breakup via a statement released in June 2022.
"We regret to confirm that we are separating," the message read. "We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect."
Since, Shakira has addressed Piqué's new relationship with Clara Chia Marti in her three post-breakup anthems, "Monotonía," "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53," and "TQG." In the first, she hints at a heartbreaking betrayal from a former partner. In the second, she mentions both her ex and his new girlfriend by name. And in the third, she sings that Piqué has said he wants her back, but she won't make the same mistake twice.
