Shakira Opens Up About the 'Rough' Year She's Had Since Separating From Gerard Piqué

On Friday night, Shakira put in an appearance on The Tonight Show to discuss her very successful “BZRP Music Sessions, Vo. 53” collaboration with DJ Bizarrap. During her interview she shared a little bit about her “rough” year and how making the song helped her recover from her difficult separation from her boyfriend Gerard Piqué.
“The thing with this song is it has become an anthem for so many women out there. I've had a very rough year after my separation, and writing this song has been so important to me,” she told host Jimmy Fallon. “It's been a healthy way to channel my emotions.”
The former couple met on set for the video for “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. They confirmed their relationship in March of 2011 and they share two sons, Sasha and Milan.
In June of 2022, they announced their split in a joint statement, writing, “We regret to confirm that we are separating. We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect.”
In January this year, Piqué went “Instagram official” with his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Martí. In her song with Bizarrap, Shakira seems to reference his new relationship, singing, “I'm too good for you, and that's why you're with someone just like you/ I wish you luck with my supposed replacement / I don't even know what happened to you/ I'm worth two of 22 [year old] / You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo / You traded a Rolex for a Casio / You're going fast, slow down / Lots of time at the gym, but your brain needs a little work too.”
On a lighter note, Shakira shared that her son Milan encouraged her to work with Bizarrap.
“He has a very good ear, very good taste,” she explained. “And he's a big Bizarrap fan. And he told me, ‘Mom, you've got to collaborate with Bizarrap. You have to get on a song with Bizarrap, because you guys are gonna be number one.’ And he sent a voice note to my manager, Jamie. He said, ‘You got to put my mom together with Bizarrap on a song because they're gonna be number one.’ And he was right.’
She said she had a “visceral” reaction to the DJ's music.
“I know when a song works because then I suddenly start moving, like, getting these small contractions from my tailbone to my iliac bone, and then it just results into, you know, hip movements,” Shakira demonstrated.
“Are you telling me that ... your hips don’t lie?!” Fallon asked.
“They don’t lie,” Shakira admitted. “They do not ever.”
