Update, June 7, 2022, 4:05 p.m. ET:

Shortly after rumors began to swirl on the internet about the Colombian singer and FC Barcelona defender going their separate ways, Shakira and Gerard Piqué announced they have split. Speaking through a joint statement obtained by People, the Dancing With Myself judge and professional soccer player revealed the news on June 4.

"We regret to confirm that we are separating," the former couple said, per the magazine. "We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our maximum priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect."

Shakira and Gerard began dating in 2011. They have two children together — Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7.

Over the past three decades, Shakira has transcended countless boundaries with her music. And now, her career has culminated in the opportunity to perform alongside Jennifer Lopez at the 2020 Super Bowl LIV halftime show.

While becoming a multi-Grammy winner (both American and Latin), she met her boyfriend Gerard Piqué in the most unexpected way. Now, the couple continues to support each other's dreams while raising their two sons.

Soccer fans will remember Shakira’s single “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” as the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. To accompany it, Shakira filmed a music video that featured notable soccer players, including Gerard (you can spot him at the 1:11 mark!).

"I wasn't a soccer fan, so I didn't know who he was,” Shakira told 60 Minutes. “But when I saw the video, I was like, ‘Hmm. That one's kind of cute.’ And then someone decided to introduce us."

Despite meeting in the spring of 2010, it would be another few months until the two were first spotted together. As fans may know, Shakira was in an 11-year relationship with Argentine lawyer Antonio de la Rúa, which came to an end in August 2010.

After several sightings by paparazzi, Shakira officially announced her new relationship with the soccer player on social media. “Les presento a mi sol. Shak,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself and Gerard. The caption translates to, “I present to you my sun.”

In January 2013, Sharika gave birth to their first child together, Milan Piqué Mebarak. “The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification,” Shakira wrote on her website. "Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth."

Two years later, the couple welcomed baby number two. Sasha Piqué Mebarak was born on January 29, 2015. Days before giving birth, Shakira and Gerard announced the news on Instagram with a sweet photo of their older son.

After nine years of dating, Shakira and Gerard have no plans of getting married. "We already have what's essential, you know?” she told Glamour. “We have a union, a love for each other, and a baby. I think that those aspects of our relationship are already established, and marriage is not going to change them. But if I'm ever going to get married, he's the one."

We're sure Gerard will be cheering Shakira on from the sidelines at the Super Bowl along with their two sons.
