"Shadowhunters" Producer Says "Ongoing Discussions" About the Show's Future Are Happening With Freeform and Netflix

Fans recently flew a #SaveShadowhunters plane above Netflix HQ.

After Freeform announced that fan-favorite drama Shadowhunters would be cancelled after three season, the fandom launched an extensive campaign to bring the show back that included a viral hashtag (#SaveShadowhunters) and a fundraising project for the Trevor Project. Now, it looks like their hard work might be paying off.

According to Deadline, Shadowhunters producers Martin Moszkowicz and other members of the Constantin Film company took notice and are “amazed” by the fans’ dedication. Martin told Deadline, "[We're] amazed by the dedication and persistence of the incredible fandom of Shadowhunters and the #SaveShadowhunters campaign. We are in ongoing discussions with the network and Netflix to [see] how we can continue to bring Cassandra Claire’s vision to television.”

Before you get too excited, though, Netflix isn’t quite on board yet. A Netflix rep told Deadline, “No Netflix negotiations are taking place to extend Shadowhunters beyond the 12 new episodes planned to premiere in 2019.” And Martin later clarified the talks are about the final two episodes of the current 12-episode order for season 3. Of course, that doesn't mean that they won’t have a discussion about it at some point in the future, or that another network won’t step up and take over so the rest of the Shadowhunters story can be told. Anything can happen at this point.

Shadowhunters, which is based on a book series by author Cassandra Clare, quickly gained traction after its premiere and became a beloved must-watch for fans due to its diverse cast and LGBTQ representation. To say fans were devastated by its cancellation is an understatement; they even flew a #SaveShadowhunters plane past Netflix HQ.

Deadline also noted that Constantin Film has gotten “thousands of emails, tweets and Facebook messages from the fan group that’s self-organized via social media.” Meanwhile, a Change.org petition to save Shadowhunters has garnered more than 143,000 signatures.

Showrunner Darren Swimmer also weighed in on the fandom's passion for the show after fans flew a #SaveShadowhunters banner over Netflix headquarters. "We could see the #SaveShadowhuntersPlane from our parking lot!" he tweeted. "It is quite moving to see the loyalty of this fandom."

Clearly, Shadowhunters fans are determined not to say goodbye to their fave show quite yet.
