SEVENTEEN in Caratland: Best Moments from 5th Fan Meeting

On August 8, South Korean boy group Seventeen held their fifth fan meeting, “Seventeen in Caratland,” to coincide with leader S.Coups’ 26th birthday. This time around, fans were also given the chance to attend a soundcheck rehearsal five hours prior to the main event. Spanning four hours and featuring 14 multi-view screens and fanfic-esque VCRs, to say fun was served would be an understatement.

Originally intended to be both an online and offline fan meeting at Jamsil Stadium, the 13-member group canceled the offline portion in July to comply with COVID-19 control measures as COVID cases rise in South Korea. The now fully-virtual event kicked off with the group performing their newest title track “Ready to Love” followed by the very first live performance of “Heaven’s Cloud.” To round off the first portion of the show, the members held a game segment called “Bittersweet Talk,” whereby they showered each other with compliments and amicable mini roasts.

Clad in pastel pink ‘fits, the group then performed You Make My Day’s “Oh My!” and Love & Letter’s “Pretty U” before playing a few rounds of the “Sentence Puzzle Game” with MC Woozi. The group also put their theatrical chops to good use during their “What on Earth” skit (with Dino inarguably stealing the show).

For the traditional unit swap stages, the performance team took on an oldie but a goldie: vocal team’s “Chocolate.” The hip-hop team followed suit with a giggly interpretation of "Lilili Yabbay" (originally by the performance team), and the vocal team ended things on a high note with the hip-hop unit’s 2017 song “Check-In” adding puns galore, an aespa “Next Level” reference, and “Jeonghan Chicken” spotlight.

Weaved in between S.Coups birthday celebrations and heartwarming ments, the group also performed “Anyone,” “Love Letter,” “Our Dawn Is Hotter Than Day” (now turned into its “S.Coups bday remix” thanks to a failed adlib), and the feel-good summer song “Holiday.”

Though there was no repetitive ending à la “아주 Nice'' like last year, the show ended with a small gift: the release of the “In The Soop SVT ver.” teaser trailer, which will premiere later this month and was also shown during the soundcheck.

This “Seventeen in Caratland” marks the second time in a row that the annual fan meeting has been held exclusively online due to the social restrictions in place in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Last year’s Caratland – which took place on August 30, 2020 – congregated fans from 121 regions across the world. According to a press release, this year, Caratland reached 98,000 viewers worldwide (including duplicates). Seventeen’s fifth fan meeting also comes just weeks after the group landed their debut in the Billboard 200 chart with their eighth mini-album Your Choice.

Until Caratland opens its doors once again next year, if you missed it this past weekend or simply want to relive it, delayed single-view streaming will also be made available for ticket holders on August 15.
