SevenDays hosts Community Kindness Festival at Jewish Community Center

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — On April 13, 2014, the day before Passover, a self-proclaimed white supremacist shot three people in an anti-Semitic attack at the Jewish Community Center and Village Shalom in Overland Park, Kansas.

On Saturday — the 10-year anniversary of the shooting — the victim’s friends and families announced the first-ever Community Kindness Festival, which aims to turn the tragedy into an opportunity for kindness and love.

The festival, which starts on Sunday, is a new and free event that will take place at the Jewish Community Center. Those in attendance will be welcomed with food trucks, interactive kindness activities and a live performance from NBC’s The Voice 2023 finalist Kate Cosentino, the festival’s headliner.

Cosentino is the cousin of 53-year-old Terri LaManno, one of the victims in the shooting. She hopes that this festival, led by the non-profit organization SevenDays, will create everlasting affects on the community and will encourage people to bring about change.

“I’m so proud of the ripple of kindness and also floored with how big it has been and how positive, especially, Mindy has been in the face of such tragedy,” Cosentino said.

“This is a beautiful example for people to follow. We need to spread kindness and heal from really difficult things.”

Seven Days of Kindness was founded by Mindy Corporon, whose father, 69-year-old Dr. William L. Corporon, and son, 14-year-old Reat Underwood, were killed during the shooting at the Jewish Community Center.

The organization provides free resources to communities, schools and businesses around the county, and according to its website, hopes to “shine a light on the darkness of hate.”
