Seth Meyers Helped His Wife Give Birth in the Lobby of Their Apartment

Sunday night, Seth Meyers and his wife, Alexi Ashe, welcomed their second child. A boy, who they named Axel Strah, was born happy, healthy, and. . . in their apartment building’s lobby.

The Late Night with Seth Meyers host recounted the dramatic delivery on his show last night. Although it started off as a "totally normal Sunday," Ashe suddenly went into labor. The comedian ordered an Uber, but, as he recounts: "My wife just says, 'I can't get in the car. I'm going to have the baby right now. The baby is coming.' I'm just trying to calm her down...I'm like, 'Look, no,' because I've been through exactly one birth."

But as soon as they got to the lobby, it was clear: that baby was on its way. So Ashe got on the floor, while Meyers, her mother, and their doula gathered around her.

“I called 911 and over the course of a minute conversation, I said, ‘We’re about to have a baby; we’re having a baby; we had a baby,” Meyers said.

Meyers thanked the New York Police and Fire Departments, who were quick to the scene and cut Axel’s umbilical cord, and his neighbors, who brought down warm towels to wrap the baby in before the EMTs arrived. Soon after, Ashe and the newborn were transported to the hospital. "Everything was fine. It's crazy, obviously," he said, also complimenting his wife's calm handling of the situation.

It is indeed a crazy story, but Meyers stuck by the old adage: pics or it didn't happen. So, right then and there, he pulled out not one, but two pictures of the ordeal: one of his wife and newborn getting escorted on a stretcher by the EMTs, a second, on the lobby floor, getting an oxygen mask from a firefighter.
