'Sesame Street' Debuts New Muppet To Support Children Affected by Conflict and Crisis

Sesame Street will be unveiling a new Muppet character in support of children and families affected by crisis and conflict. The new character, Ameera, is set to make its debut on Ahlan Simsim, the local version of Sesame Street in the Middle East and North Africa.
The new character represents a witty, inquisitive 8-year-old with a passion for science and basketball. Ameera is portrayed with a bright purple wheelchair or forearm crutches to help her get around due to a spinal cord injury. With her great sense of humor, she proves to be a natural social butterfly and leader, encouraging friends to be the best versions of themselves. President of Sesame Workshop Sherrie Westin said in a statement,
"Thoughtfully designed to challenge stereotypes and reflect children’s lived experiences, Ameera brings visibility to the more than 12 million displaced persons and 240 million children worldwide estimated to have a disability as well as to the important role of girls in STEM.
At a time when more children than ever before are affected by conflict and displacement, Ameera also highlights the urgent need for creative and flexible approaches to delivering playful learning and early education to communities affected by crisis."
Ameera stars as an innovative character that delivers playful learning to those affected by conflict and crisis. She joins other beloved Ahlan Simsim friends including Basma, Jad and Ma'zooza. Ameera makes her debut in the fifth season of Ahlan Simsim and the new "Watch, Play, Learn" videos as a part of Sesame's Worship's goal to create content for playful learning. This is also Sesame Workshop's effort to support children impacted by crises through combining educational media and direct services.
