Manhattan got a healthy dose of color and ’90s nostalgia on Saturday night, thanks to Sergio Hudson’s fall 2023 fashion show. Hudson, a Black designer from South Carolina, established his popular ready-to-wear label in 2014 and has been a force to watch ever since.

Held at New York Fashion Week’s headquarters at Spring Studios, the vivid runway instantly set the tone for this season’s show as models strutted on top of bright graffiti to the show’s upbeat soundtrack, which included hits like “Show Me Love” and “Finally.”

The new collection was primarily composed of suiting separates, skin-baring dresses and a few dramatic all-black looks for good measure. Standout designs included neon suiting sets in pink, green and blue that were accented with contrasting piping. Two especially memorable looks played into the no-pants trend we’re seeing more and more this season — the models in question essentially wore black underwear to complete their outfits.

Hudson also played with eye-catching texture this season in the form of tweed, sequins, denim and glossy, latex-like material.

From tweed mini dresses paired with matching cropped blazers to psychedelic patterns covered in sequins, each segment of the show effortlessly flowed into the next. Several designs also were complemented by metallic buttons and statement zippers.

All the models made their way down the runway with a carefree attitude in sky-high platforms, and some even stopped halfway down to give the audience a flirty wave and a 360-degree turn.

Each model in the very diverse group sported a colorful cat-eye with bold, fluffy lashes and nude lips created with Stila Cosmetics, and most were given a voluminous half-up, half-down hairstyle with long waves trailing behind them.

Hudson’s front row also drew a star-studded crowd on Saturday night, as Kimora Lee Simmons, Candace Bushnell, Fern Mallis and Joy Reid all were in attendance to support the designer, who has dressed the likes of Michelle Obama, Hailey Bieber and Keke Palmer.

If your wardrobe could use some more color and playfulness, Sergio Hudson’s latest collection is definitely worth drooling over.
